The Mystery of David Conklin 6/01/1760 - 1854, Page 2 6/19/26: I received permission from the property owner to visit the house that David built some 207 year ago. It is located on a rise about half a mile east of Hartford (aka Croton) Ohio. The house is derelict and its only occupants are the local wildlife. Appears someone has stripped off an outer layer of cement siding from the backside of the house and a couple other places. Combine that with some broken windows and what looks to be a recently formed leak in the roof, and the house will obviously not be around much longer. But amazingly, the farmland around the house is still intact, is still being farmed, and has actually been added onto. I’m not sure the original size, but it was 67 acres in 1875 and is currently 89.59 acres. The property apparently stayed in the Conklin family until about 1940. What is striking upon nearing the house is a maple tree in the front yard that is quite simply enormous, with a diameter of perhaps 3 feet one way and 4 ½ feet the other. Anyway, I took a few photos for posterity. |
